Sample of Blender’s 3D Space and Sample composite for a scratch concept. I will be using my Sampltude ProX for for all post audio work. I will have to match the lighting setup of the mayor to make it somewhat believable. Then I will composite all the data assets in to Blender’s Node Compositor and finish the grading in Blender’s VSE (Video Sequence Editor). ![]() To create some depth for the project, I will bring in static backgrounds in to Blender as 3D plane objects. You can also scan a graphic or texture into the computer and animate it. The basis of the software is to allow you draw a vector base character and animate its vector splines Data along a timeline. I will be using Gimp to do all if any cut out to do a composite overlay with the Mayor. I will get the basics of this software within the next week. I am by no means a cartoonist or animator by trade. I am a big supporter of open source software and I came across this software called Synfig Studio. I thought about using Adobe & Apples products for the this task but I decided to go another route. I am completely unfamiliar with this story but took on the challenge anyway. This week the Mayor’s Assistant of my city’s municipality asked to me assist them in doing a “Twas The Night Before Christmas” animation as the Mayor reads the story for the Christmas Holidays. It is a symbiotic relationship between the two apps. ![]() Import them into Natron, process the shot & render, then ingest back into Lightworks for finishing. Your work around is to create a edit or sub-clip for each shot that needs vfx and render them out. Lightworks can use Natron as a helper app like it was a plugin but there are other issues of roundtrip processing that is not implemented as of now. I am using Natron to do all of my 2D tracking and visual effect overlays and then render them out to ingest in to Lightworks for final grading. It is a very powerful open source app that provides features that are in commercial digital vfx compositing software. The image below is Natron Digital Compositor. The main point of this blog is that I wanted to show how you can use free and open source software together to get a project done. The image below is an incomplete assembly edit and more footage & audio/sound-bytes will be added. I own FCPx and Avid Media Composer, but Lightworks has certain effects built-in that I find conducive to my abstract film work. I am using Editshares Lightworks to ingest and editing my own personal short films. ![]() It is one of the best if not the best filmmakers app for the iPhone.
